new entrepreneurs seeking guidance from professionals to build networks and develop their businesses.
The program was kicked off by Anurita Varma, Executive Director of TiECon, who greeted the audience by saying, “TiE Southern California’s signature annual entrepreneurship conference today brings together more than 700 plus entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and business professionals. This is surely a great combination of substantive conversation, education and peer networking. People make high-level connections and learn a lot.” Smita G. Bagla – TiECon Chair, then cheered the members and beginners by stating, “As the conference chair, I welcome you to our SoCal chapter’s 20th annual entrepreneurship conference ‘Unleashing Hyperspeed Innovations- Connect, Disrupt, Innovate’.
In her presentation, Bagla positively convinced the audience by giving a list of the benefits associated with TiECon. “The pulse of today’s market indicates a feverish energy to innovate, to leverage data, to develop new products for underserved markets and come up with ways to communicate and collaborate. Keeping in step with this trend, this year, we brought in leading specialists and domain experts in digital transformation who will share their secrets.”
Talking to IJ, the incoming President for 2018, Bagla added, “My initiatives for next year include expanding the reach, accelerating mentoring of young entrepreneurs, making powerful connections, and holding more such events.Today, we have become part of something big and better. Let’s learn from our past achievements and create a better tomorrow for all of us.”
In the first session, Erick Miller spoke on “Bitcoins and Blockchains”, and guided the audience to a bold vision of “tokenizing the world”. Then, Anima Anandkumar, Principal Scientist at Amazon AI ( Artificial Intelligence) took to the stage and talked about “What is Machine Learning/AI?”. She also informed about Amazon conference in Nov in Las Vegas where various products will be launched.
Another significant session- “Connected Health - How to leverage the Plecosystem Economy” by John Mattison, Asst. Med. Dir. Chief Health Information Officer, Kaiser Permanente, impressed many listeners. One of the most exciting seminar was by Oscar award winner for Technical Achievement “Technology in Entertainment Industry” by Parag Havaldar who spoke on his area of expertise and new opportunities in the field of video games and movies.
The afternoon also saw two fireside chat sessions- one with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Navneet Chugh and the second with Jesse Draper, Founder Partner of Halogen Ventures, with Harina Kapoor, which kept the audience interactive.
After lunch, it was time for the three break out panel sessions- “Mission: Impossible’: Becoming an Entrepreneur!”, “Elements of Disruptive Innovations - Data, Analytics, Connectivity and Simulation” and “VC and Angel Investing – learn from the Professional Investors and Funded companies”, which featured several plenary discussions with plenty of time for informal exchange and mentorship. The ‘Open Mic Pitch’ session followed where TiE SoCal Labs members judged several eligible participants and declared two winners, who grabbed the grand prize of the Best Startup Idea.
The event ended with a peek at the making of the immigrant story “The Tiger Hunter”, produced by Megha Kadakia. Bagla concluded the event with a vote of thanks to sponsors, members, volunteers and new members.
For the first time at this year, a Product Showcase section was put up where entrepreneurs got a chance to display and demo their software and hardware and services.Another attraction was the test ride opportunity of the latest Tesla Model S or Model X, which many people thoroughly enjoyed besides having a delicious breakfast, lunch and snacks during the entire day.
