BREA,CA-From commerce to comedy,the inimitable Surendra Sharma came to town with his Haryanvi accent and his ‘char line suna raya oon”.He recited his favorite poetry and added new flourishes to a packed house at the Curtis Theatre here on Oct 6. He needed no introduction, but was brought onto the stage by Raj Punjabi,
narrating one of his favorite Sharma anecdotes. Punjabi has been hosting Hasya Kavi Sammelans for the past 19 years, always offering an array humor events to Angelenos.
Sharma was the first to introduce Hasya Ras, comic and satiric poetry. He established the tradition of Hasya-Ras in the Kavi sammelan. Sharma was honored by the Government of India, in 2013, with the Padma Shri. Two other comic poets showed their talent at the event. Sampat Saral, from Jaipur, regaled the crowd with his simple, yet hilarious poetry. He told a story about the Joota (shoe) and Mukut (crown),in the political arena..the crown being for the politician’s party and the shoe being for the opposition party! Sita Sagar, a professor, focused on 100 famous things about Los Angeles, and wove them into a long poem, which left the crowd spellbound. She had received this information the night prior, and remembered each of the people, places and things about Los Angeles with precision. From recalling Rodeo Drive to the Lakers,Las Vegas to Lake Arrowhead, from Laguna Beach to Huntington Beach, she touched the hearts of the audience. The event was sponsored by Punjabi under his banner Khusboo Arts & Entertainment Anju Multani of Law Office of Anju Multani was a cosponsor.
