NORWALK, CA – Sampradaya, Sahana and Swaramanjari schools of music presented their fourth annual show `Colorful Combination of Composers,’ at the Sanatan Dharam Temple here on Feb 23 to a packed hall. The schools which specialize in Carnatic music, presented about 25 to 30 students each.
The morning session began with Subramanya Vaibhavam, presented by students of the Sahana School of Music run by Sankari Senthilkumar. This was followed by Atthigiri Varadar Vandaar presented by Subha Narayan’s Sampradaya School of Music. Sanskrit compositions of Oothukadu Venkata Kavi were presented by Indu Nagarajan’s Swaramanjari School of Music. In the afternoon session, students from the three schools sang a variety of songs from different composers.
Speaking with IJ, Narayan said,`` Everyone learns from each other and it is a display of great unity and team work.’’ Narayan went on to add that each school picked a theme based on a number of factors like the skill of students. ``My theme was on Lord Atthigiri Varadaraja of Kancheepuram . There is a belief that the Lord lives under the water in the temple tank in Kancheepuram. He emerges once in 40 years to bless his devotees. This year happens to be the 40th year and so I chose him as my theme. We as teachers are happy to educate the kids as widely as possible in the field of Carnatic music.’’ The event ended with a Carnatic Music Quiz Competition in which students from all three schools took part.
