7th grade in the Tamil language. The event started with Sasha Ledford, a Caucasian American student welcoming the audience in Tamil. For the next 3 hours, the events brought about the richness of the Tamil language, culture, and arts. The children engaged the audience through dance, music and drama, raising social issues in the process.
The mime program focused on the importance of water conservation. The 2nd grade students showed how they are already into innovation with a shadow puppet show that showcased the ancient Tamil culture and arts. The toddlers highlighted the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, something that most of us have forgotten in the hurried lifestyles.
The Annual Day preparation started a few weeks ago with a slew of competitions that were open to kids across Southern California, including: an essay competition, a drawing competition and a new Tamil crossword. The young competitors dressed as prominent figures and characters in Tamil history, while the mothers showcased their artistic talents in “Kolam”. The kids participated actively in the “Thirukural” competition, where they recited and explained the meanings of classic 2-line Tamil poems from the book, which is considered one of the greatest works ever written on ethics and morality.
The event ended with the National Anthem. The event was made possible by the selfless dedication of 80 volunteers, 250 parents and 70 teachers, who meticulously planned each segment.
