1619 after which he came to Amritsar. A special congregation was held at Gurdwara Singh Sabha Buena Park on Oct. 23. A religious discourse by Iqbal Singh was followed by Keertan with Bhai Gopal Singh and Bhai Bhawandeep Singh. Food stalls were put up by Sangat members. Speakers on the occasion said Guru Hargobind initiated the ‘Sant Sipahi’ (Warrior Saint) lifestyle code for the community. For a Sikh, the first call of duty was to be a wise, knowledgeable and exceptionally virtuous person and secondly, a warrior too, to protect one’s own dignity and that of others.
Similar celebrations were held at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Walnut where thousands attended the religious congregation. Food stalls served different variety of food. Keertan by the students of Punjabi School was followed by Keertan and Katha by the Head Priest of the Gurdwara, Bhai Raghbir Singh. He said the day provides us inspiration to illuminate our mind with the light of Gurbani and drive away the darkness to liberate ourselves from vice. A fireworks display was the climax of the occasion. At Khalsa Care Foundation in Pacoima, nearly 2000 people gathered to celebrate the day. Keertan and Shabad Vichaar followed Sukhmani Sahib Path. Speakers at the congregations delivered the message to stand up for the right and not to fall for the wrong. The Sikh Center of Orange County in Santa Ana held celebrations on Oct 24 where nearly 4000 people gathered. Food stalls were a hit as they offered traditional favorites including Tikki, Chole-Bhature, Pav Bhaji and Indian sweets.
