CLAREMONT, CA - Once again the South Asian Studies Association, the 13-year old alliance of scholars, as well as leaders of academia, business, NGOs, and philanthropy, devoted its annual weekend conference to shine a spotlight on South Asia’s diverse peoples, cultures, histories, challenges, and opportunities. ‘SASA 2019 –
Taking South Asia to the World,’ was held at Claremont McKenna College here, from March 1-3. Close to 100 attendees from across the US and globally had access to 65 diversified scholarly presentations within 16 panel sessions, as well as three major plenary sessions. The arts festival featured visual and performing arts from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
In commenting on the success of its 13th annual conference, SASA Chairman & CEO Ken Silverman stated, “SASA 2019 included the most diverse array of academic papers and presenters in our history. From ancient and contemporary geopolitics, to religions and meditation, to economics and the environment, there were indeed topics of great scholarship, interest and value for all attendees. Again noteworthy this year were our three exceptional Plenary Sessions. These included a groundbreaking look at the application of artificial intelligence in addressing research in higher education, especially across South Asia, which was led by Claremont McKenna President Hiram Chodosh; insightful looks at both personal and planetary wellness, jointly led by Dr. Christopher Chapple of Loyola Marymount University and Dr. Rafiq Dossani of the RAND Corporation’s Center for Asia Pacific Policy; and an assessment of the streaming media revolution across South Asia, led by preeminent US-India media attorney, Arnold Peter, and featuring prominent US and India media experts.”
Another highlight was presentation of the SASA annual Exemplar Awards. The Exemplar Award for academic achievement was presented to Dr. Sudha Pai, President of India’s Policy Research and Management Network, who also delivered the academic keynote Address. The Exemplar Award for business leadership was given to Andy Kaplan, longtime President of Sony Pictures Television Networks, who built Sony’s networks in India into marketplace leadership, and then took Sony’s India networks across South Asia and worldwide. The Exemplar Award for community service was presented to Dr. Sudhir Parikh, noted physician, publisher, philanthropist, who has previously received India’s Padma Shri and Pravasi Bharatiya awards, as well as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Dr. Parikh is CEO of Parikh Worldwide Media, as well as CEO of Centers for Allergy and Asthma.
