continued with a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the floods. Chandra Bose, President of Southern California Tamil Organization then welcomed everyone and thanked those who had already donated to the cause. Bala Palaniswamy, Co-Founder of Southern California Tamil Organization, introduced the slide show presentation which consisted of images of the after effects of the floods on the population of Chennai and how people helped each other in the time of crisis, with “Maa Tujhe Salam” playing in the background.
Continuing the event, Palaniswamy, Subbu Shanmugham, Ex-President of Southern California Tamil Organization; Sampath Karikalan and Anu Sriram, both from Southern California Tamil Manram, came on stage to motivate members of the audience to donate heartily to the cause.
In between dances, a representative from the Indian Consulate, Sandhya Haridas,the Guest of Honor and the Assistant Director of India Tourism thanked the committee members for their efforts and went on to mention the role the Government of India is playing to assist the victims of the floods. Dr. Nitin Shah took a moment to encourage the audience members to donate as much as they possibly could saying if you want to be happy for a lifetime then help someone else. One little girl got so inspired that she said she would donate all the money in her piggy bank and all the clothes in her closet she no longer wears.
Emcee for the evening was Shobana Nandhan. The dance performances kept the audience entertained in between the fundraising. A Bharatanatyam performance by the Shristi School of Dance, was led by Charulatha Jayaraman, a recipient of the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu. Jayaraman and her group of seven girls beautifully executed the performance consisting of three dances A Carnatic music performance was put up by Rose Muralikrishnan and the students from Spring Nectar Academy. This was followed by a semi-classical dance performance from Kavitha Dance program, on the song “Narumugaye” from the film “Iruvar.” The final performance depicted the triumph of good over evil. Eleven children took time to demonstrate the reincarnation of goddess Durga, who took birth to kill the King Mahishasura. Paralleling the fact that volunteers are risking their lives to help others. Committee members thanked everyone who came out and donated, as well as the volunteers who helped put the event together in such short notice. All guests were then treated to a sumptuous dinner.
