LONG BEACH, CA – The SDM Cancer Relief Fund held its 32nd Annual Fundraiser at the Crystal Ballroom of Golden Sails Best Western Hotel here on Nov 11 attended by over 300 guests. An amount of $55,000 was raised. Chairman and Founder of SDM Mathew Daniel welcomed the guests and artistes and all the 14 directors.
LONG BEACH, CA – The SDM Cancer Relief Fund held its 32nd Annual Fundraiser at the Crystal Ballroom of Golden Sails Best Western Hotel here on Nov 11 attended by over 300 guests. An amount of $55,000 was raised. Chairman and Founder of SDM Mathew Daniel welcomed the guests and artistes and all the 14 directors.
He emphasized that during 1985 when SDM just started, it offered financial help to one patient at Trivandrum Regional Cancer Center. Now SDM provides financial help to 50 poor cancer patients in Trivandrum RCC; 40 patients at Amala Cancer Medical Center, Trichur; 40 patients at theCaritas Medical Center, Kottayam and 40 patients at Calicut University Hospital, Calicut. Besides supporting patients in these hospitals SDM also sponsors three beds in Amala Medical Center and Caritas Medical Center.
President of SDM Abraham Mathew briefly summarized the achievements of SDM for the last 32 years and said for the first time SDM also helped poor pediatric cancer patients in the ICU at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Torrance by providing Halloween costumes. He also informed that besides four hospitals in Kerala, SDM plans to help poor cancer patients in other states of India as well and he appealed to all present to donate generously to help over 250 patients in 2018. The highlight of the evening was the key note address by Dr. Milan Seth, an oncologists from Harbor UCLA who educated the audience on the reasons for increase in lung cancer in the US and appealed to all present to quit smoking and save lives. Dr. Sreedevi Warrier one of the directors introduced Dr.Milan Seth, Chief Guest to the audience. The fund raising banquet ended with a vote of thanks by SDM secretary Jai Johnson. It was made clear that SDM is administered by 14 board members and not a single penny goes towards overhead charges. All funds raised at the banquet would go directly to cancer patients. SDM also has an endowment fund in the US. During social hour and dinner guests were entertained by Reuben, who played professional saxophone. The entertainment segment also included a high energy opening dance by Blue 13 dance company and the finale grand performance.
