BELLFLOWER, CA - Belonging to the style of the Khayal singing of the 400 year old Benaras gharana, Rajan and Sajan Misra are the exponents of this gharana. It has become the dominant form of Hindustani classical music that comprises of the largest fraternity of artists and the leaders of this classical music tradition are the Misra brothers. Hailing from the city of Benaras, the brothers were trained the Khayal type of singing by their grandfather: Bade Ramdasji Misra, father:
Hanuman Prasad Misra, and uncle: Gopal Prasad Misra. The acknowledgement of their service to Hindustani classical music did not simply end when they were awarded with the title of respect as Pandits. In 2007, they were awarded the third highest civilian award from the government of India- the Padma Bhushan. The brothers have performed all over the world.
On March 9, the Misra brothers will be performing for Satsang Foundation, at the William Bristol Auditorium, here at 2pm. Suman Laha, another well known Indian classical musician will also be performing on the veena at the same recited.
