ARTESIA, CA- Pioneer Cash & Carry opened its second location in ‘Little India’ on Pioneer Blvd here with a bang on Oct 17 at a ribbon cutting ceremony throwing the new store officially open for business. Present at the grand opening and representing the Artesia City Council were Councilmen Tony Lima and Ali Sajjad Taj,
Miss Artesia family and friends of Devraj Keray the owner known to friends as ‘Dev,’ along with wife Dhanu. The ribbon was cut by Keray’s son and daughter Aakesh and Payal. The massive new store on 183rd Street occupies what was once Dihu Market. The space which had remained vacant for around five years with no takers, has now come alive once more.
The new store, not too far from the first store located at Pioneer and 186th Street, will without a doubt take grocery shopping to the next level in ‘Little India,’ and can compete with any major mainstream grocery franchise. Its spacious, contemporary interiors, with row upon row displaying the wide range of South Asian groceries , produce and dairy and a special deli counter, will be the delight of any shopper. As Keray claims , “ This is a game changer. We have the largest choice of Indian groceries in Southern California.”
The grand opening celebrations kicked off at a well coordinated open house reception On Oct 16 evening where a large number of invited guests caught the first glimpse of the new store and all it had to offer. Speaking to the guests, Keray said a dream which he had cherished for many years had finally become a reality. He was proud his family had served the community since 1982 , well over 30 years. He reminisced about how his dad Premjibhai Keray, had started off with a 1000 sq ft store near Norwalk mandir. Thanking his dad for all he taught him, he said “ it took so many years to come so far. Thanks dad,” adding “this is where my father’s legacy comes to an end and mine’s starts.” He also thanked wife Dhanu and family members who had come as far away as London for their support,in particular thanking Dilipbhai his supplier from Bombay who had flown in to be present at the event.
As to why Keray chose this location for the new store he explained that the biggest boon was parking. With vendors all over ‘Little India’ dissatisfied with the present paid parking system which is hitting business hard, Keray is happy that shoppers at his new location will face no such problems. With ample parking space they can be assured of a smooth and hassle free shopping experience. The guests were entertained by singer Jeffrey Iqbal , who was discovered by none other than maestro A R Rahman for the movie ‘Slum Dog Millionaire’ and was the first American born singer to represent the US on Zee Tv’s ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.’ Iqbal accompanied by his band of musicians, belted out a number of latest Bollywood hits to the delight of the guests many of whom came forward to shake a leg. It was an evening filled with good food, fun and entertainment. The new store is located at 11700 183rd Street, Artesia, CA -90701.
