NORWALK, CA - The Southern California Tamil Organization with support from multiple organizations organized a fundraiser to support Tamil Nadu farmers in areas affected by the Gaja Cyclone which recently hit the state, at the Sanatan Dharma Temple here, on Dec 16. The program started with a melodious Ganesha song by Thirumalai Balaji followed by Tamil Thai Vaazthu.
The Sangeet Dhwani group and Raj Upadhyay followed with melodious Tamil and Hindi tracks, respectively.
Subsequently, everyone in attendance participated in a moment of silence to respect and honor those who lost their lives in the cyclone. An audio and video presentation was shown to the audience depicting the devastation of the affected regions. The pictures personified the affects of the cyclone which has destroyed the livelihood of farmers, destroyed their homes, coconut and mango trees, as well as their animals. President of Socaltamil.org Jeevan Natarajan, thanked the audience for their support and encouraged everyone to donate to aid the farmers. Subbu Shanmugham then invited Dr. Nitin Shah to the stage who has generously led fundraising efforts previously in other natural disasters. Additionally, Venu Pushpavanam, was invited to the stage as he initiated the idea for the fund raiser.
It was announced that $19,500 has been committed to the cause so far: Major donors were Ashok and Madhu Patel, Socaltamil.org , Uma Agarwal and Avadhesh Agarwal Family Foundation and Sarvamangal Family Trust.
Shah continued encouraging audience members to donate as much as they possibly could by saying,`` if you want to be happy for a lifetime then help someone else.’’
The fund raising was coordinated by Socaltamil.org committee members Murali, Savarimuthu, and Venu.
Spring Nectar Foundation for Indian Music & Heritage generated $2,149 earlier in the day via efforts of Sri N. Muralikrishnan (NMK) through his instrumental students by teaching them a song focused on service to humanity through music.
A Carnatic music performance was put together and presented by Dr. Rose Muralikrishnan and her students. Which was followed by a beautiful presentation by NMK and his instrumental students. Vidya Ganesh and her students continued the evening.
Meendum Shruthilaya group’s Balaji Thirumalai, Vijethaa Balaji and Murali Bala entertained the audience with their melodious singing of popular Tamil film songs.
Depicting the plight of farmers today in general, Sangamam’s “Gaja” act brought to life the hardships the delta farmers faced in the aftermath of the Gaja cyclone. The audience was completely awestruck with the riveting climax performance. It was touching to see both adults and kids alike shedding tears at the havoc Gaja has wrecked in the lives of the famers.
Several members of Socaltamil.org actively assisted in fundraising including Bala Palanisamy, AC Bose, Meenakshi Sundaram Ganesh, Vaiyapuri, Sathyaraj, Nachiappan and Sundar. Audience members donated generously throughout the event and the collection at the auditorium was more than $6,000 thus making the total above $25,000.
