IRVINE, CA -The Jagannath Society of California celebrated Dola Purnima on Mar 23 at the Mandir, here. Dola Purnima is a popular six-day long festival. In India, during this time, a palanquin carrying the Lord goes to neighborhood homes and the families make offerings. Mimicking this festive atmosphere,
tents were set up at the Mandir representing the various groups of Sanatan Dharma as well as devoted families. Devotees of Sai Baba and Chinmaya Mission as well as from other temples came to welcome the Lord. The rituals were followed by a presentation on the story of Lord Jagannath and a cultural program with music and dance performances. Eminent Odissi artist. Nandita Behera was recognized by Dr. Nirode Mohanty on behalf of JSC and the So Cal Oriya community for her contributions to Odissi dance.
The founding member of JSC, Kirtan Behera contributed towards the palanquin while a creative team from Torrance worked for several months to give a ‘heavenly’ look to the palanquin with fine crafting and painting.
Volunteers contributed and served an authentic Oriya dinner to a crowd of around 300 people.
