40 Indian American organizations. The honorees were outstanding women who have, over the years, given immensely back to the SoCal community in various forms. These awardees were Prafula R. Shah, Chandrika M. Shah, Rekha R. Bajaria, Usha J. Shah, Bharti R. Lunagaria, Pramila K. Khetani, Nalini U. Solanki, Ila G. Mehta and Pratima N. Doshi.
The event started with an introduction to Suru Manek as the president of the Los Angeles Ratna Honors group by the event’s facilitator Joshi. This was followed by the lighting of the `divo’ by the women of the Manek family, prayers and the singing of the national anthems of the US and India.
Arti Manek presented a vibrant and colorful cultural show which included Kathak performed by the children and garba performed by mothers.
Each Ratna awardee was introduced individually by Joshi. They were each bestowed with a plaque, a traditional shawl and a fresh red rose. This was followed by speeches by each Ratna awardee describing each ones love for humanity and their experiences to bring about an inclusive society. Each one had a heart warming tale filled with affection and care for the under privileged. Their contribution touched many fields including education, medicine, philanthropy, art and culture.
Cerritos Pro Tem Mayor Naresh Solanki and Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu who were present, presented each awardee with commendation certificates from their cities. Suru Manek addressing the gathering, spoke about the construction of the Jalaram Center in conjunction with the Divine Art of Yoga complex. The Jalaram Center would act as a soup kitchen to feed the poor in the neighborhood and the homeless on designated days of the week.
The other initiative was the formation of an affiliation with the other ethnicities to foster multi-culturism. This concept is based on Suru Manek’s book, `Generation B: Black America’s RESET To Success – A Blueprint.’ James Wilson, with whom this concept will be brought to a reality was also present at the event and he addressed the attendees on this vision as well. Wilson, a renowned African American, is an acclaimed expert on multi-culturism.
