featured Indian cuisine and Indian dances by the Rangashree and other dance troupes. The keynote speaker was California State Controller Betty Yee. The event was held in observance of the Asian Pacific Heritage Month, which celebrates Asian Pacific cultures and honors the contributions and accomplishments of Asian Pacific American communities. The luncheon also aims to help promote mutual understanding, respect for diverse cultures and community pride among LACOE employees.
In his remarks, LACOE Chief Financial Officer Scott Price paid tribute to Indian-Americans for their contributions to American society, citing the builders of some of America’s earliest railroads and farms, the Civil Rights pioneers and digital technology entrepreneurs.
“We thank them for breakthroughs in business, the arts, medicine, science, and technology,” Price said.
The event also honored seven LACOE students and student workers, who were awarded scholarship grants in recognition of their efforts to overcome challenges to reach their educational goals. Organizers thanked SEUI-Local 99 and the California Credit Union for their continued support of APHG’s scholarship program, as well as the Artesia-based Ashoka the Great for their catering service. The event was coordinated by LACOE braille transcriber Jaimini Mehta.
