RIVERSIDE, CA - Over 500 people gathered at the California Baptist University here to celebrate India’s 69th Independence Day at an event organized by the India Association of Inland Empire. dignitaries sang the Indian national anthem. The stage with a giant backdrop of the Indian tricolor and decked with flowers, added a welcoming grace to the ambience.
The evening had a blend of dances, singing and instrumental performances by children as well as adults. Dances ranged from the classical Bharatanatyam of South India, to exciting Bollywood dances. Prominent dance teachers from the Inland Empire including Ragini Chandrasekar, Paulomi Pandit, Sonal Jarecha, Dipa Patel and Geetika Jain trained kids as young as four to perform. The peppy and patriotic Bollywood numbers by various groups kept the audience applauding. The dances were well interspersed with patriotic songs which pleased the audience.
Riverside City Councilman Paul Davis, Riverside City Councilman Andy Melendrez, May Davis, President of Asia Pacific Cultural Association, prominent community member Dr. Harkeerat Dhillon and Gayatri Rao founding member of IAIE were the guests of honor. They were felicitated by Chandrasekar Venkatraman, President of IAIE and other committee members.
The event sought to honor the sacrifices of Indian leaders and freedom fighters as well as bring the Inland Empire community together. Delicious snacks and meals were available at the ‘New India Sweets & Spices’ food stall. Every participant was presented with a trophy as a gesture of appreciation and encouragement.
