NORWALK, CA- The Gujarati Society of Southern California hosted a Grand Diwali program on Oct 28 at the Sanatan Dharma Temple here which entailed a 5- star dinner banquet with live entertainment. Happy, outstanding, and melodious was the ambience the audience was left with by the end of the night.
NORWALK, CA- The Gujarati Society of Southern California hosted a Grand Diwali program on Oct 28 at the Sanatan Dharma Temple here which entailed a 5- star dinner banquet with live entertainment. Happy, outstanding, and melodious was the ambience the audience was left with by the end of the night.
Diwali is one of the many occasions in which individuals enjoy getting together and celebrating with one another; which is why starting off the program with appetizers and a social hour was a perfect fit.
Subsequent to everyone having had the time to mingle the program took off with singers from the community taking turns to regale the audience before the appearance of the main attraction for the evening Maya Deepak. Lawni Roy, Ketan Sharma, and Rashmi Shah sang a variety of songs to get the audience in the perfect mood. Anis Chandani played the flute and other instruments as well as managed the sound while Rupesh Kotecha played the tabla accompanying the singers.
Roy began by singing popular Bollywood numbers. One of the many well-known tracks was Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from Dum Laga Ke Haisha. In between songs, Chandani would play an array of music to keep the audience on their toes guessing which song was to come next. Guests were taken back to the 60s and 70s with Sharma’s choice of songs. Sharma’s set consisted of hits from Kishore Kumar. Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas from the Blackmail and Shama Hai Suhana Suhana from Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani were two of the songs Sharma sang.
Taking the audience in a completely different direction, Shah sang some well-known Qawali tracks to entertain those present. Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen from the movie Waqt garnered the most appreciation from the audience.
Jawahar Shah, Secretary, took a few minutes to say a few words. He welcomed Bhikhu Patel, President; Pramod Mistry, Vice President; G J Zala, Treasurer; and the volunteers calling them to the stage where he thanked them all for their hard work and dedication without which this event would not have been possible.
Shah continued by informing the audience of upcoming events. One of the many upcomimg events is a movie screening of ` Oxygen’ on Dec 2 , a Gujarati movie. Bhikhu Patel, Mahesh Wadher, and Manu Shah , donated funds to GSSC to purchase the right for this movie to be shown to the Gujarati community for free across the US and Canada.
Shah took the time to introduce Maya Deepak, the highly anticipated moment of the evening. Deepak sang and played the harmonium as Chandani and Kotecha complimented her singing. Deepak began by singing a few traditional Gujarati tracks. Continuing on she sang some popular Hindi numbers. During her time on stage, Deepak sang a wide range of popular Gujarati and Hindi songs as well as told a few jokes and recited a few poems. Everything presented to the audience by Deepak was welcomed with delight.
The event came to a close with dinner being served and enjoyed by all.
