SAN DIEGO,CA -For the 25th year in a row, the production house of Hamid Daudani and Group, has put up yet another brilliantly executed show, on April 7, at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. “Ek Ajnabi Mil Gaya”, a soul stirring, sensitive love story resonated deeply with the audience.
Daudani and group, under the leadership of Hamid Daudani as a founder, writer, and director, conceive and put together productions entirely with the help of local artists who take great pleasure and pride in getting this live production together year after year.
“Ek Ajnabi Mil Gaya” was produced and directed by Daudani assisted by Atul Prasad. Mahesh Hotchandani assisted the directors.
The play is about two strangers, Sapna and Sameer, brought together by chance. It is a story of love unfolding over a series of letters exchanged by two people who have never met, have nothing in common and yet find a very meaningful connection. A very subtle and mature love story that portrays a complex relation between a husband and wife, the heart-warming bond of mother and child and the magic of words to heal a broken heart.
Sapna, played by Anubhuti Neb, is a housewife, married to Rajeev, played by Karthik Sangam and mother to a small girl, Pinky, played by Eeshal Rodha. Her world revolves around taking care of her daughter and trying to make her husband happy. Sapna’s neighbor, played by Rashmi Sagvur, affectionately called Aunty, is her companion and confidante. When Rajeev abruptly abandons Sapna and Pinky, Sameer, played by Zulfiqar Rashid, finds himself dreaming of a future with Sapna. After some hesitation and foiled attempts to meet each other, Sameer finally finds the courage to show up at Sapna’s doorsteps.
The play has several delicate moments building up a beautiful relationship between two people who are lonely and longing for true companionship. There are other characters who have their own stories unfolding on sidelines. the goofy delivery guy, played by Ali Nazeer, who is a romantic at heart, brings a lightness to the play with his attempts at poetry and romantic dialogue. Musa Bhai, played by Prasad Adusumalli, the office aid, is another solid character who touches us with his simplicity and innocence. Aunty’s portrayal of loss and confusion at the demise of her husband breaks our hearts. Zia, played by Champ Nath and his wife Shabana, played by Sagufta Vahid, are a lovely couple to look up to Sameer as a father figure and bring out the warmer side to Sameer’s personality. Pinky, as the precocious daughter of Sapna, steals our hearts with her very believable performance. And finally, Sameer and Sapna share such wonderful chemistry that our hearts root for them when they are finally united at the end of the play! A departure from previous shows, the dance and entertainment was saved for after curtain call. Nupoor Dance Academy and Nrityakala Dance academy entertained the audience with dances to a medley of old Hindi songs and classical dances.
The show also paid a touching tribute to Nipul Shah who passed away last year. Shah was the co-founder of the group and handled technical direction and set design for the last 24 years. To mark its Silver Jubilee Anniversary, cast members reenacted snippets from some of the past plays and there was also an award ceremony for some of the loyal production team members who have helped with the play year after year.
