of Indic Civilization and Religions. The foundation was established on the belief that education on Dharma will make a vital difference in the orientation and attitude of future citizens of this world towards the various possibilities of their own lives. Ultimately, this realization would lead to a more balanced, sustainable and harmonious co-existence of all life on the planet. A positive by-product of this teaching would be the repositioning of India’s contribution to the world stage.
The lecture began with an enlightening history of epistemological studies under the umbrella of Dharma by Kalyan Viswanathan, who was visiting from Texas and is an active member of TCF. He portrayed how India’s unique civilizational insights distinguish the country from others. Viswanathan explained that a prominent figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies such as Vedanta and Yoga was Swami Vivekananda. A Hindu monk in the nineteenth century, Vivekananda conducted hundreds of lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy and spreading his education all across the United States. Dr. Manohar Shinde, Chairman of the Dharma Civilization Foundation, went on to showcase a series of projects the organization hopes to complete in the near future. The foundation’s current project is the Swami Vivekananda endowed Chair for the study of Hindu Dharma at the University of Southern California, which has a goal of raising $3.3 million towards the cause. The funds would be used directly for professorships, schools, departments, conferences, scholarships, and sponsoring books and journals. Thus far, DCF has made giant strides in academia by holding retreats at colleges such as the University of Southern California, University of California at Irvine, and Claremont Lincoln University. Furthermore, the organization has funded various master’s programs in Yoga Studies at Loyola Marymount University and PhD level curricula at Cambridge University.
The lecture was established to inspire everyone to understand and appreciate the importance of Dharma traditions. The organization hopes to recruit volunteers to continue the efforts of bringing this type of Indian philosophy to the masses, especially in the United States. DCF sponsors include the Tarsadia Foundation, Bank of America, Sanatan Dharma Foundation and many other organizations and supporters across the globe.
