ARTESIA,CA-Artesia City Council, with local and federal representatives, celebrated the construction of downtown Pioneer Boulevard with a groundbreaking ceremony on, March 12 in front of the Verizon building on the Pioneer Blvd. between 183rd and 186th streets. This stretch of Pioneer is predominantly occupied by Indian businesses and is referred to as ‘Little India’. “Today is a historic day for the City of Artesia,”
said Mayor Miguel Canales. “Nearly 10 years ago the City Manager and staff had a vision for Pioneer Boulevard. That vision was slowed down as a result of state legislatures and California governors taking away our funds for these types of improvements. But today, with a new City Council and a new City Manager, that vision is being realized.”
The Downtown Improvement Project is a major, vigorous plan to widen sidewalks, reduce traffic lanes, and to include a “pedestrian promenade” that would allow for pedestrians and public spaces, like an open air theater, as well as landscaping.
“Today Artesia becomes a small, trailblazing city with a smart growth vision. Today we make history, today we lead, and today we break ground,” said Mayor Canales.
These improvements promote business and improve the local economy by creating a shopper-friendly environment for visitors.
A monument will be placed at the Artesia boundary, at the southern end of the downtown area, with a globe signifying and celebrating Artesia’s status as one of the most diverse cities in the world.
