to donate for relief there. At the end of the evening, an amount of $65,000 was raised after all of the donations were calculated and matched by Tarsadia Foundation, said Dr. Nitin Shah Haiti is a Caribbean country which was barely starting to make its way out of the chaos of the 2010 earthquake when another disaster struck, Hurricane Matthew which hit the country on Oct. 4 causing another major crisis. It was the ghastliest catastrophe to occur in Haiti since the destructive 7.0 earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010. Dr. Nitin Shah; B. U. Patel’s Tarsadia Foundation; and Virendra Shah, President of the Jain Center of Southern California; came together to raise awareness and garner funds for relief. After a delicious dinner, the fundraiser started off with music. Dhiren Buch, Raj Upadhyay and Jalpa Buch were the entertainers of the evening. The three took turns to sing songs from various Bollywood eras.
Emcee for the event Smita Das, then gave a brief background for the fundraiser and went on to introduce Virendra Shah.
Virendra Shah spoke about the crisis at hand in Haiti and how donors needed to help. Additionally, he described the other individuals who had made this event possible, saying, “Mr. B. U. Patel always shies away from the limelight, but will be the first person to donate and Dr. Nitin Shah is a man with a golden heart.”
Dr. Nitin addressing the gathering spoke of how this event came about. He said he received a phone call from Ashok Patel who guaranteed him $10,000 to help Haitians if there was an event held in Los Angeles to raise awareness and funds for this cause. He invited Patel to come and speak to the audience. Patel who came all the way from Dallas, TX for the event, said, “We are all children of God and to thank God we should help others.”
Then continuing by talking about how Haiti had not fully recovered from the earthquake when the hurricane hit, Patel concluded on an interesting note, saying, “We spend money on our children so why not do it for other children?”.
Dr. Nitin Shah then gave a brief PowerPoint presentation on his experience while in Haiti after the earthquake in 2010.He then introduced Matt Little, Director of Partnerships and Communications with Jenkins/Penn Haitian Relief Organization (J/PHRO).
Little started off with a video presentation about the organization and what they do. J/PHRO is an organization started by Sanela Diana Jenkins and Hollywood actor Sean Penn, to support and create stronger communities in Haiti after the earthquake. The organization continues to help and rebuild Haiti. Their main goal is for Haitians to help Haitians because it gives future generations hope that Haitians can do it for themselves. Little concluded by thanking everyone in the room for doing their part. Dr. Nitin Shah then announced and recognized some of the bigger donors of the evening. B. U. Patel was invited on stage and said that Tarsadia Foundation would double the amount collected. On that high note the main program came to a close. Then taking turns the singers sang the night away.
