The event started by a devotional song ‘Saanu Charna to Karee Na Dur Datiya’ sung by the trio. This was followed by `Jigre Ta’n Milde Nahi’ which reflected the die hard and high soaring spirit of Punjabis. ‘Tohade Naal Vase Punjab’ written and composed by Sangtar, talked about the contributions and achievements of the community living abroad. The audience loved each moment and every song presented. An important part of the creative process of their group performance was to allow each singer’s unique voice to shine through. The group performances were followed by individual performances. One of the top Punjabi singers Manmohan Waris who had dominated the musical scenario of Punjabi music for almost 23 years since he released his first album ‘Gairan Naal Peenghan Jhootdeye’ in 1993 and never looked back, won the hearts of all by his non stop fun filled performance. He started with one of his most popular songs ‘Koka Karke Dhoka Ni Dil lai Giya’ and made the audiences dance to his tunes. This was followed by a more sober song ‘Parne Nu’ from ‘Faraar’ for which he was awarded Best Playback Singer at the PTC Punjabi film awards 2016. When he sang his other popular song ‘Kite Kalli Beh Ke Sooche’n Nee’, the audience sang along with him and practically everybody came down on the dance floor to shake a leg. Another of his song ‘Teri Chardi Jawani Ne’ infused a new lease of enthusiasm among the audiences. When Waris sang ‘Aaja Bhabi Jhoot Lai’ he attracted all the women to the dance floor.
Punjabi musician, Kamal Heer who is the younger brother of Manmohan Waris and Sangtar, during his live performance showcased his virtuosity in folk music and his command of the art of traditional Punjabi music. Heer provided some of the most original and revitalizing music. His songs, ‘Kuriye Ni Saggi Ful,’ ‘Mil Jaou Koi Agle Moor Te’ and ‘Raati Ohdi Foto Dekhi Facebook Te’ were received by the audience with cheer. It seemed the singer judged the mood and pulse of the audience and presented the songs accordingly. Sangtar, a Punjabi singer, music composer, songwriter and poet who has written songs and made music for many singers, sang songs that were reminiscent of tradition and folklore with his progressive sound.
Manmohan Waris, while talking to IJ said he along with his other two brothers formulated Punjabi Virsa in 2004 to showcase Punjabi culture, music and heritage all over the world and these shows had become internationally famous. He said in addition to the entertainment, his songs always come with the social message. Waris added he was the first singer who raised his voice against drugs, child labor and environmental pollution through his songs.
All the singers thanked the audience and the organizers especially Raman Chadha, Iqbal Samra and others for making the event a grand success. Iqbal Samra thanked the sponsors for their support in making this dream event a reality.
