LA MIRADA, CA – Nearly 800 people had an evening full of amusement and fun with legendary singer, actor, choreographer, music composer, song writer and a star performer Gurdas Maan, live in concert here at the Theatre for the Performing Arts on August 7. The highlight of the event was the excellent use of state of the art multi media technology. Maan’s entry was choreographed in such a fashion that it seemed he directly came out of the big screen on the stage. The audience applauded the entry of their beloved artist with a blast. He acknowledged and reciprocated the emotions of his fans by bowing and saluting them from the stage. He was dressed in a light blue traditional Punjabi outfit with embroided red jacket and traditional jewelry ‘kentha’ and started the concert by remembering God and offering prayers.
He started off with a Sufi song, ‘Tere Ishq Da Girdha Penda’ that talked about spiritual love between disciple and the spiritual teacher. He managed to generate such energy in the theater that made the audience do bhangra for the rest of the evening. It was followed by another popular number, ‘Lambi Seeti Maar Mitra’. Although his songs were designed for entertainment, the lyrics spoke about social issues as well. His next song, ‘Roti Haq Di Khiyea’ focused on the dignity of labor.
His concert was well orchestrated with eight musicians besides accompanying singer. Maan showed his respect to the accompanying musicians by acknowledging them as well. He sang ‘Heer’ accompanied on piano. This song was written by Punjabi poet Waris Shah, best-known for his seminal work ‘Heer’, based on the Punjabi love legend of Heer and her lover Ranjha.
This was followed by one of the greatest Punjabi song of all times’ Challa’. This song, which was used in the movie ‘Long da Lishkara’ had catapulted him to cult status. Maan also sang ‘Bolian’ a form of folk literature expressed as poetic couplets. His other songs, ‘Ki Khatiya Mai Teri Heer Ban Ke’, `Tu Vi Reh Gya Adhura,’ ‘Bus Rehn De Cher Na Dardan Nu’ were well received by the audience with great enthusiasm. National promoters Nirmal Dhaliwal of Sai Production thanked the visiting artists, audience and sponsors, specially Joe Sandhu, Ron Sandhu and Harbhajan Singh Samra for their support.The event was organized by Sai Productions in association and New Delhi Palace, Pasadena.
