RIVERSIDE, CA - The Shri Lakshmi Narayan Mandir here, celebrated Ugadi on March 18 drawing large crowds. It began with the customary and invocatory Ganesh puja. The event was marked with prayer and befitting of the arrival of the new season according to the Hindu calendar, marked with joyous music and dance.

There was Marathi songs and Bharata Natyam dance. All volunteers and women devotees wore green sarees - the festival theme for this year. The temple served authentic south Indian food catered by Madras Tiffin including the highly symbolic pachadi which is said to signify the essence of life itself: the sweet jaggery symbolizing happiness, salt showing interest in life, tamarind symbolizing challenges, neem flowers are the difficulties of life, raw mango indicates surprises and new challenges and the chilli powder is indicative of the passion in one’s life. In one simple dish, there exists life’s emotions. teaches that life is a mixture of all the emotions.
