CERRITOS, CA – The Gujarati Society of Southern California held its first inaugural `uttarayan’ (kite flying) festival at Cerritos Park East on Jan 14. The new non-profit organization, which seeks to connect Gujaratis in Southern California, organized the event by inviting community members to come enjoy the traditional Gujarati festival...
of Makarsankranti through kite flying, potluck, music, and a picnic . Over 500 people showed up, many with multi-generations of family members to enjoy the kite flying on a sunny and breezy day. Over 800 pairs of patang and firki (kites and string) were imported from India and distributed to the participants at a cost. Community members brought ample amount of food and drinks for the potluck for everyone to enjoy. With music blaring and people getting passionate about kite flying, the event lasted all afternoon. For many it was their first `uttarayan’ event and for others it brought home memories of celebrating the festival in India.
Regardless, all had one thing in common: it was a fun way to spend time with family, friends, and community with a bit of a competitive streak when yelling “kaipoche” when they successfully cut away another flying kite.
GSSC is holding another community event for youth on Jan 27 and a Holi event on March 4.
