SEAL BEACH, CA- An Indian-American father and his three-year-old son were killed after a crash on the 405 Freeway near here, which prompted the closure of several lanes and led to major morning traffic congestion on June 15. His wife and daughter are in critical condition, according to media reports. Friends of the Katara family have set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral and medical expenses.

At the time of going to press $133 K had been raised. The goal is to reach $200K.
According to sources, Shweta and Tarun’s parents are currently on their way to the US from India. The SoCal family which has been torn apart, were returning home to Irvine from the airport when their car stalled on the freeway and was hit by another car. The family consisted of father, Tarun Katara, mother Shweta Katara, 10-year-old daughter Shagun and 3-year-old son Rohan.
The crash, involving the Honda CRV which belonged to the family and the Toyota Rav4, happened about 2:30 a.m. June 15 just north of the Seal Beach Boulevard exit. California Highway Patrol authorities said they believe the CRV stalled in lanes with members of the family inside.
The 39-year-old father and his son had just exited their disabled CRV when it was rear-ended by a Toyota Rav4.The pair was struck in the collision. They were pronounced dead at the scene, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman said.
The wife and daughter had stayed in the car and were injured in the crash. They were taken to a local hospital, with the girl in serious condition and the woman with moderate injuries, the spokesman said. Shagun has severe brain injuries and is under a medically induced coma while Shweta has multiple injuries but is conscious. A 47-year-old woman driving the Toyota Rav4 was also taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. The carpool and No. 1 through 4 lanes were blocked for several hours, which led to a serious backup for commuters on the already-congested freeway. An investigation into the fatal crash was ongoing. Authorities underlined the importance of staying in your car if it stalls on the freeway, keeping all occupants restrained within the vehicle with the seat belts on and calling 911 to get help.” For those wanting to donate: www.gofundme.com/support-for-shweta-and-shagun
