NEW DELHI - With attacks unabated, India on Nov. 12 conveyed its concern over the violence against its students in Australia, which declared that its responsibility was to ensure their safety and security.
The issue of continuing attacks on Indian students over the last six months came up during a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd here.
Both the Prime Ministers also explored ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of defense, security, trade, industry and culture, but the visiting dignitary made it clear during his public functions earlier that Australia cannot change its policy on supplying Uranium to India because of its long-standing policies.
“I have conveyed my concern to Prime Minister Rudd over the safety, security and the well-being of our students in Australia,” Manmohan Singh said in his remarks in the presence of Rudd after their meeting in Hyderabad House.
The Prime Minister quoted Rudd as having assured him that Australia is fully committed to their security and would take all steps in this regard.
Rudd said, “It is the responsibility of Australians to ensure the security of foreign students. We have work underway on this”.
In his public interactions also, Rudd said “As Prime Minister of Australia, I am deeply disturbed and disgusted by attacks of violence against any foreign students studying in our country as our guests”. (PTI)
