LONG BEACH, CA - Asha for Education organized an Indian classical dance concert for charity here on April 25. The main featured event of the evening was a Bharatanatyam concert by renowned danseuse “Kalaimamani” Charulatha Jayaraman. The audience was enthralled by her performance.
She began her recital with a Ragamalika Shlokam followed by a touching piece about the devotion of Nandanar and the greatness of Lord Shiva. “Thevidatha thiru natanam” in Ragam Kalyana Vasantham brought out the aspect of Nritta. Picturesque poses and aesthetic body movements marked her performance. Excerpts from Bhagawad Gita, was chosen as the next item. The talk between Arjuna and Lord Krishna on at the battle field was beautifully brought forward. Her dedication and finesse was evident throughout her recital. The ‘Geethopadesam’ piece was followed by a lilting folk number, ‘Kavadi Chindu’. Charulatha finished her recital with a Thillana in ragam Kadhanakuthukalam.
Charulatha is Director of Shrishti-school of Bharatanatyam. She is a resident of Irvine.
The evening also featured two entertaining supporting performances. Pujita Krishna Jyothi performed Kuchipudi and her portrayal of Dasavataram was very well received by the audience. Hirangi Ashar gave an excellent Kathak performance.
Asha for Education is a secular organization dedicated to change in India by focusing on basic education of unpriviledged children in India. Asha has over 66 chapters world wide and works with non-governmental organizations in India to support education of children.
