IRVINE, CA -The TiE-SoCal Chapter monthly event focused on ‘Trends in Cloud and Cyber Security’ at the ROC, here on Feb 27. The event was divided in two sessions. The first included a short talk on ‘Art of Making’ Connections and 25 minutes of managed networking amongst attendees. Second session included a short address from the Mayor of Irvine Donald Wagner, speeches and Q&A on cloud and cyber security...

Anshuman Sinha, Executive Director of TiE-SoCal welcomed everyone present and stressed on the need for invited guests to become member of the organization and touched upon the monthly events and how they are beneficial for the members. “Entrepreneurs who are better networkers are 15% more likely to get more sales or funding. These skills can be taught, and TiE SoCal gives them a forum to practice, so they can break down their fears, and grow their businesses.”
Smita Bagla, Tie-SoCal President, welcomed all speakers and attendees and spoke on the ‘Art of Making Connections”. She shared the essential elements of skillful networking and building connections. She said, “In a networking situation, always step in with a pleasant attitude, be respectful, listen mindfully to the people you approach.After establishing initial contact think about what you can do help them. After the meeting diligently follow-up with a note on what you had discussed. Be prepared to give before you ask for something. A pleasant exchange after the meeting, results in establishing the connection.”
Brian Frankel, Marketing Director TiE-SoCal, then ran the managed networking exercise engaging all attendees and speakers. In managed networking attendees stand in two lines facing each other and talk to each other for three minutes. After every three minutes, one line moves to place the next person in front of the person in the other line. This networking exercise continued for about 25 minutes.
The second session had the speeches by Dr.Charly Brown, Bala Ramaiah and an short address on the benefits of living and operating a business in Irvine by Mayor Don Wagner.
Keynote speaker, Dr. Charly Brown of Pepperdine University talked about cyber security and security breaches. She shared the statistics on security breaches. 77% of people are vulnerable to computer hacking. 95% of the credit cards get breached. She indicated that the threat actors are hacktivist, insider threat, financial motivation, strategic, and disruption. She stressed on the importance of business owners learning the basics of informational security fundamentals: strong passwords, patching ability, auditing management, employee awareness, user access management, incident response, vulnerability assessment, and business continuity planning. Brown highlighted the need of a risk management plan that outlines the critical information, forecast, quantifies the risks and complies with the industry regulatory agencies. It enables one to react quickly, inform the affected, file a notice of breach, thoroughly examine the hacking details and bring cyber security experts on for advice.
The next speaker, Bala Ramaiah, CEO of ISSQUARED talked about infrastructure security. His company ISSQUARED, provides infrastructure security, management services and Information Solution products. His talk focused on the considerations in implementing cloud and infrastructure security for a small business. He indicated that one should thoroughly plan, consider the timing required, chose the right environment, on premise or public, private, or hybrid cloud, be cognizant of cost of implementation, cost of running and, study the regulations. He emphasized to consider all financial requirements, delivery, application, business requirements, people and security, for a successful infrastructure execution.
