BREA, CA - The Indo American Community Theatre held its 16th annual singing competition in Hindustani Classical Vocal and Light Vocal on Sept. 18 at the Curtis Theatre here. In the Hindustani Classical Vocal category all of the seventeen contestants were children, preteens, and teens.
BREA, CA - The Indo American Community Theatre held its 16th annual singing competition in Hindustani Classical Vocal and Light Vocal on Sept. 18 at the Curtis Theatre here. In the Hindustani Classical Vocal category all of the seventeen contestants were children, preteens, and teens.
It was heartening to hear young contestants peform with ease various ragas such as Sarang, Malkauns, Durga, Kedar, Bhilpalasi to name a few. All were supported by Parvez Hussain Khan and Hemant Ekbote on tabla.
Maya Namandi, Sohani Pawan, and Arjun Trikannad were the winners in the children, preteen, and teen categories, respectively. The other winners were Sanvi Shankar, Arinima Devilpally, and Ayushi Bhattacharjee in the children’s category, Shrees Shirekar and Anajal Jain in the preteen category, and Anushree Chaudhuri in the teen category.
Dr. Arun Dravid and Prasad Upasani took the time to judge these young contestants. At the end, both of the judges gave the young participants valuable advice. Mukesh Desai, the organizer of the evening’s events, invited other organizations from the community to assist the Indo American Community Theater in taking Hindustani classical music to even larger audiences.
The Light Vocal category, both live and karaoke focused on Bollywood music. In the vocal category, there were 33 contestants . The response of the audience heightened when the singers performed bhajans such as ‘Shreeman Narayan’ and ‘Gayeyo Ganpathi Jage.’ Additionally, film songs from the fifties to the current generation that intrigued audiences were ‘Babuji Dheere Chalna’ and ‘Poocho Na Kaise’ to more recent songs like ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ and ‘Manwa Lage.’ Aashi Shah, Aditri Harish, Meghana Bhardawaj and Gayathri Hariharan were the winners in children, preteen, teen, and adult karaoke segment, respectively. Sonia Khot, Anjal Jain, Zaresh Justin, and Kavita Narayanswamy were the winners in children, preteen, teen, and adult live categories. Suhani Shah, Sohani Pawan, Tasifa Rashid, and Shridhar Balan were the runner ups in the children, preteen, teen, and adult karaoke categories, Shravya Sethi was the runner up in the children live category, and Aanya Amin and Vishal Pandey were second runner ups in the preteen and adult karaoke categories. Vijay Bhatt, Dipali Singh and Vishal Vij, local singers, judged the competition. All contestants were supported by Rajendra Sanatgara on keyboard, Aakshy Khetani on drums and Parvez Hussain Khan on tabla.
