LONG BEACH,CA- Shreya Ghoshal, background singer from Bollywood, who needs no introduction rocked the Long Beach Terrace Theatre on July 18. As the audience screamed and cheered, Shreya walked onto the stage singing one of her more recent and popular songs, ‘Sunn Raha Hai Na’ from ‘Aashiqui 2’
starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. She appeared from the left side of the stage in a stunning fuchsia colored lengha with a bronze sleeveless blouse with high heel shoes to match.
Prior to her arrival on stage four background dancers danced to ‘Sun Raha Hai Na’ as she sang from backstage. The opening act, Hrishikesh Ranade, winner of the 2009 Sa Re Ga Ma Pa ‘Maharashtracha Ajacha Awaaj,’ appeared every so often to assist Ghoshal in singing duets that required a male singer as well.
Ghoshal and Ranade came together to sing a variety of songs. Some of the duets were ‘Saans’ from ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ starring Katrina Kaif, Shah Rukh Khan, and Anushka Sharma.’Manwa Laage’ from ‘Happy New Year’ starring Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan.As well as ‘Samjhawan’ from ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’starring Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. In order to keep the audience well entertained Ghoshal walked back and forth to both ends of the stage while dancing and expressing her emotions to maintain the high energy levels of the audience who reciprocated to her every move. So much so that she did not feel the need to check the iPad for lyrics or even drink a sip of water.
Furthermore, to keep the audience’s attention there were background dancers who came on stage to dance to some of the more popular upbeat songs. The dancers appeared to ‘Manwa Laage’, ‘Barso Re’ from Guru, ‘Nagada Sang Dhol’from ‘Ram Leela’ and ‘Chikni Chameli’ from ‘Agneepath.’
As the concert progressed, audience members were screaming requests at Ghoshal. As well as attempting to fulfill all of the requests she came up with witty remarks which they enjoyed.
One of the audience members screamed for ‘Chikni Chameli’ to which Ghoshal replied, “Not yet, if I sing that song now all of you will leave.” Towards the end of the concert Ghoshal finally sang the highly anticipated ‘Chikni Chameli’ which was an epic crowd pleasure which enticed whistles, screams, and cheers.
Another audience member requested ‘Sunn Raha Hai Na’ to which Ghoshal said, “You are definitely a late comer!” As this was the first song she sang.
Ghoshal sang multiple of her own songs transitioning from one song to the next to create an original melodious mix. She sang ‘Hasi’ from ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’starring ‘Vidya Balan’ and Emran Hashmi with ‘Vaada Raha’ from ‘Khakee’ starring Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai to produce a new song a combination of both.
After a brief fifteen minute break, Ghoshal came back in skinny black jeans with a red long sleeved sequined lace blouse and black heeled boots to take the time to devote a section of her concert to songs that are significant to her and all music lovers. The most memorable aspects of movies are songs and the impact of those songs are made by the remarkable legends who sang them, said Ghoshal prior to stating that she attempts to have a section in all of her concerts dedicated to those singers who have inspired her to become the singer she is today.
Some of those who inspired her she said are Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. In honor of those legends Ghoshal sang ‘Lambhi Judaai’ from ‘Hero’ starring Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri.
Continuing her tribute to the legends of the past she sang ‘Kuchh Toh Log Kahenge’ previously sang by Kishore Kumar from ‘Amar Prem’ starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, ‘Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum’ originally sang by Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar from ‘Silsila.’ Ghoshal’s final song in dedication to her idols was ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi’originally sang by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen.
Coming back to the current period, Ghoshal sang ‘Teri Ore’ starring Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar. While singing this song there were times she would point the microphone in the audience’s direction for them to sing along. As the audience was singing, Ghoshal took a moment to stop and praise them for singing so well.
“There are some professional singers in this audience and professional bathroom singers. This proves that hard work pays off,” Ghoshal said jokingly. After being reminded on social media that it has been 13 years since her debut into the industry, Ghoshal started reminiscing about how Sanjay Leela Bansali gave her the chance of a lifetime to sing in his movie. Her first song as a background singer was ‘Bairi Piya’ in 2002 with Udit Narayan from ‘Devdas’ which starred Madhuri Dixit, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Bringing the concert to a close Ghoshal sang ‘Mere Dholna’ from ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ starring Shiney Ahuja, Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, and Ameesha Patel. As she sang this song, Ghoshal created an atmosphere Manjulika would have been proud of, by having the lights flicker, increasing the music level, and by singing to a pitch of incredible heights.
