SAN DIEGO, CA- A group of Indian- American kids from here won the Southern California First Lego League (Robotics) regional championship held in Legoland California last December. They are now heading to the World Championship to be held in Houston in April. This championship invites around 70,000 people from all over the world, with more than 70 countries participating, according to a press release.

The team called Brain Busters comprises of middle and elementary school students from 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Scripps Ranch. The team is one of only two teams in Southern California chosen to compete at the World Championship. Over 250 teams in Southern California competed in the regional championship. Team members include Sathvika Ajit, Riya Patil, Athira Nair, Ila Gowda, , Aadit Gupta, Broden Golich, Shounak Ray Chaudhary and Preena Maru.
The team’s amazing coach is Musa Safar.
The theme this year was “Into Orbit”. For the project, Brain Busters designed a way to clean space suits while in space. Currently, NASA does not have a way to clean space suits in space. As part of their research, the kids talked to an astronaut, a chemist and a space suit expert at Boeing. It was a fantastic learning experience. From their research, the team developed an interesting solution using activated oxygen and an airlock chamber to clean the suits in space. They have a lofty dream of presenting this idea to NASA some day! Not only is this a robotics competition, but it is also an opportunity for kids to develop programming skills, practice teamwork and solve real-world problems. All teams are judged on a project presentation, robot design, robot performance, and core values, the press release added.
Brain Busters is currently fundraising to help offset costs associated with the World Championships.
