like PraDigi (Pratham Digital) can effectively bridge the learning gap that hinders millions of children from realizing their full potential. The night was opened by the Pratham LA President, Raj Dhami, who spoke about Pratham’s programs, goals and governance that has earned the organization a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for seven straight years.
Due to the significant success PraDigi has demonstrated, the event hosted keynote speaker Prof. John Jong-Hyun Kim, senior lecturer at Harvard Business School, to lead a panel discussion about the positive impact of technology and digital initiatives on improving learning and combating illiteracy among millions of children throughout India. Other panelists in attendance also included: Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink, Principal and Education Lead at Google.org; Manu Shah, CEO of MS International Inc. and supporter of PraDigi; and Dr. Madhav Chavan, Pratham Co-founder and President. Despite the significant progress India has made toward enrolling over 95 percent of children in primary school, less than 70 percent will have gained a meaningful education by the age of 16 even if they remain in school. Faced with this next challenge, many entities including the Indian government shifted their focus to learning outcomes and turned to technology as a means to accelerate children’s learning.
PraDigi supplies children with tablets preloaded with Pratham-developed apps geared toward science, math and English, among others. These apps are available in 11 Indian languages and were on display after the panel concluded. Attendees were invited to tinker with the apps and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Both adults and children found the apps to be fun, engaging and educational. Pratham’s response to the realities in India led to the development of an EdTech intervention to accomplish its goal of closing the learning gap in child learning and development. With significant support from Google.org and the Sarva Mangal Family Trust, the digital initiative PraDigi, supporting Pratham’s core literacy and learning programs, launched last August.
