LOS ANGELES, CA - Recently, in the ICC World Cricket League Division 4 final the US team defeated the Oman team by 13 runs here on Nov. 6. The team consisted of 14 amazing players; two of whom are local. Timil Patel and Ravi Timbawala are the boys who are from the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County,
to be more specific. Patel is from Fullerton and Timbawala is from Irvine. Both Patel, 32, and Timbawala, 27, have had a passion for cricket from an early age. “I first started playing cricket at the age of 5 for fun,” said Patel.
Similarly, Timbawala began his love for the sport when he was a little boy.
“I was 10 years old when I first started playing cricket; although, I was much younger when I held the bat!,” said Timbawala.
Not only have these boys started playing from an early age, they both attained their skills and passion from a very important person in their lives.
“My father! He is an avid cricket lover. He used to take me to his cricket games and that is how I built the love for the game,” said Timbawala. Likewise, Patel learned how to play cricket from his dad. Both sets of the father-son duos watched cricket together and shared that as a common interest. Patel not only acquired this passion from his dad, he additionally hopes to live out his father’s dream. “It was my dad’s dream that I play for India someday… The dream was to eventually play for India,” said Patel.
Both the boys started their own dreams off the dreams of their fathers. Continuing to live out those aspirations both Patel and Timbawala are playing for the ICC World Cricket League.
“It’s a process that numerous cricketers in the country were part of. ICC hosted selection trials in multiple phases before the final squad was selected,” said Timbawala.
Although, it was a challenging choice Patel moved from Ahmedabad, Gujarat to California and then lived out his dream to play.
“Moving to the US wasn’t an easy decision at all. I was still playing first class (Ranji Trophy) when I had to make that decision to relocate due to personal reasons,” said Patel.
Building on the love and support they receive from their dads for playing cricket, both of the boys have managed to incorporate their wives into their playing as well. “The number I wanted is owned by a teammate and hence I picked #27. Coincidently, it’s also the date I got married on. Hope it brings me a lot of luck!” said Timbawala.
Similarly, Patel as well found a way to use a number that was special to his wife instead of the number he has previously used.
“My playing number was 1 since that’s my birth date. My wife’s birth date is 11 so after I got married I chose to keep 11 as my jersey number,” said Patel. Although it can be challenging and difficult to turn a passion into a career, Patel and Timbawala have done exactly that. These two have faced all of the obstacles that came their way and overcame them to be part of their dream careers.
“When you love something dearly, you find ways to live it too!,” said Timbawala.
Agreeing with his teammate Patel found a way to conquer the hardships to do something he loves.
“Ever since I started playing in school and age level cricket it was always serious cricket and I always considered cricket as a career,” said Patel. Maintaining a sense of balance amongst all aspects of life is essential. Having the right support system is a vital aspect in starting and having a career can be challenging. Now that the boys have set foot in their dream careers they strive to continue to be focused and determined toward their passion, cricket!
