TUSTIN,CA-The Organization of Hindu Malayalees had the distinct honor of presenting Koodiyattam, the oldest living theater tradition in the world with over 2000 years of history, for the very first time in the US on Oct 28 at the Chinmaya Mission Los Angeles here by Neptathya Margi Madhu Chakkyar and Dr. Indu G and troupe.
The story was Kalidasa’s ‘Sakunthalam’ with English subtitles. It was attended by over 300 and OHM raised $12,000 for its Cultural Center. The two-hour long performance was watched in pin drop silence with great enthusiasm as the audience was taken to new heights. Swami Ishwarananda, senior resident Acharya of CMLA Tustin, commended OMH for taking courage to bring this oldest classical dance form in the world to the US in this new world dominated by Bollywood dance, and social media. He complimented and advised OHM to bring more such kshetra artes from Kerala to the US for the enlightenment of the future generations.
He said Koodiyattam is the original form of dance and this cannot be modified, abridged or compressed and has to be watched in its original form and in full length with original instruments and music, or else it would lose its value and importance.
The Swami blessed all the dedicated office bearers of OHM and members for working toward achieving their dream to own a home for OHM and appealed to everyone present to donate generously so that the Cultural Center could be made use of by the community.
