LOS ANGELES,CA -Nearly 3000 people flocked to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, on April 7, for NDM Bollywood Dance Studios annual recital titled, “Alice in Bollyland. The recital is an imaginative dance recital inspired by characters of Alice in Wonderland and the premise of La La Land. In the quest to become a Bollywood actress, Alice, played by Stephanie Leatham, finds herself in a new land where she meets interesting characters such as...
Mr. Mad Hatter (Varun Gurunath) and Ms. Cheshire (Danish Bhandara), who guide her through a journey of music and dance. Unfortunately, like most struggling actors, her adventure is not easy and Alice soon discovers that not everyone in Bollyland has a heart of gold, especially the evil Queen of Hearts, played by Rita Sehmi, who attempts to sabotage her efforts.
Directed by ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Bollywood choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan, Alice in Bollywood is an enchanting journey with 500 student dancers and breathtaking costumes by Khushy Designs. The rest of the cast was comprised of the members of the NDM Dance Troupe, who played characters such as Tweedle Dee and Dum, The Snow Queen and The Caterpillar to name a few. Some of the highlights included Ghoomar, Bajirao Mastani medley and Disco Deewane to name a few. Perhaps, the most touching moments of the recital were tributes made to the late Sridevi. Creative Artistic Director Khushy Niazi, dressed in all white, performed to the iconic instrumental music from Chandni. A tear jerking homage of pictures projected of Sridevi, closed the show, as the NDM Troupe members performed to Hawa Hawaii, alongside Mahajan.
