WESTCHESTER, LA – Leaders in the fields of Yoga and Ayurveda gathered on Oct 6 and 7 at Loyola Marymount University here as part of LMU Yoga Studies’ conference on “Ayurveda: Health For Body and Mind,” which brought together scholars, researchers, medical professionals in the fields of Yoga, Ayurveda,
and Western medicine to engage in dialog on the future of holistic and integrative health and wellness in our modern and globalized world. LA –Sponsored by the Doshi family, the conference featured keynote speaker and recipient of the Doshi Family Bridgebuilder award, Dr. John Hagelin . President of the Maharishi University of Management, Hagelin, is a quantum physicist, science and public policy expert, educator, and as the leader of the Transcendental Meditation movement in the US, is committed to promoting peace and consciousness through the spread of meditation and “consciousness-based” education and healthcare. He is also one of the world’s pre-eminent researchers on the positive effects of meditation on brain development – a subject championed throughout the conference from speakers across the Jain, Sikh, Vedic, and Western healing traditions. Dr. Hagelin’s keynote lecture featured his current work on creating a “Theory of Everything” through uniting breakthrough discoveries in quantum physics and string theory with the ancient science of consciousness presented in Yoga and Ayurveda.
The final day of the conference Oct 7, opened with speakers from the LMU Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy community, including Dr Larry Payne, of the LMU Yoga Therapy Rx certificate program, Dr Jay Kumar, Dr Lori Rubenstein Fazzio, Felicia Tomasko of LA Yoga Ayurveda and Health and Dr. Siva Mohan.
In the afternoon, medical professionals in the field of western medicine, including Dr Rahul Navin Doshi, Dr Anjana Kamdar, Dr Vikram Kamdar, Dr Harvinder Sahota and Dr Nitin Shah, presented as a panel on “Prospects for Health and Wholeness.” The audience also heard from Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary on “Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection Through Ayurveda.”
In the evening, the conference neared its close with further remarks from Dr Robert Keith Wallace and Dr Robert Schneider who spoke on the anti-aging and the clinically tested healing effects of Transcendental Meditation, and Dr. Wallace presented on “Ayurveda and the Microbiome.”
Following these remarks, Doshi offered remarks that included a plea for Dr. Hagelin to run for presidency of the US again. He had tried once before in the year 2000 as a candidate of a party based upon Vedic principles. Doshi then conferred the Doshi Family Bridgebuilder Award to Dr Hagelin,. Two days of inspiring presentations on the validity and progress of holistic healing approaches to global health challenges concluded with Dr. Hagelin’s keynote lecture, which set the stage for a future of deeper integration of all knowledge fields towards a unitive and integral approach towards life, health, and spirituality.
Professor Chapple and Dr. Payne spoke on the LMU Masters of Arts in Yoga Studies two-year degree program, which is the first of its kind in North America, and the Yoga Therapy Rx certificate program.
On Oct 6 the opening day began with remarks from the head of the Yoga Studies department at LMU and Doshi Professor of Indic Studies, Christopher Key Chapple, followed by a Jain panel on `Healing Mantras in Jainism: Bhaktamar.’ This panel, featuring Dr. Ellen Gough, Dr. Manju Jain, and Dr. Amressh Mehta, explored historical perspectives on Jain healing mantras, as well as current research on the remarkable healing effects of the Bhaktamar mantras on patients with various levels of disease, sickness, and injury.
Then representatives of the Sikh healing tradition, Dr Shanti Shanti Kaur Khalsa and Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa presented on the importance of “healing presence” in health care professionals’ interaction with their patients, and the therapeutic and healing applications of the Ayurvedic herbs, respectively. There were also lectures from Dr Sat Sir Singh Khalsa, of Harvard Medical School on the “Psychophysiological Science and Research Evidence” for the positive health effects of yoga and meditation, and Dr Sahib S. Khalsa, of Laureate Institute for Brain Research on the positive effects of “float therapy” found in clinical studies.
Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf, spoke on “Chronobiology and Ayurveda,” emphasizing the importance of aligning our life routines with the rhythms of the physical universe. Oct 6 evening concluded with a sneak preview of the new film, “Ayurveda Unveiled,” by documentary filmmaker Gita Desai, and lectures from Dr. Ramkumar Kutty and Dr. Suhas G. Kshirsagar, on the wisdom teachings of the Vedas and the “Art and Science of Vedic Counseling.” Rounding out the lectures on the healing teachings of Ayurveda, specifically as found in the Charaka Samhita, Acharya Shunya Pratichi Mathur, President of California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine, presented on “Ayurvedic Medicine on Environmental Issues and Dharma.”
