THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - A new fish species, belonging to spiny eel variety, has been spotted in a river in central Kerala. Researchers came across the species, named Macrognathus fasciatus, in Manimala river at Karuthavadasserikara recently. They claimed that a new species of Macrognathus genus was being reported from the state after a gap of around 150 years.
It is characterized by a combination of dorsal spines and yellow vertical lines on the latearal sides. It is blackish brown at the back and yellow at the ventral side, they said. Mathews Plamoottil, assistant professor in Government College, Chavara, collected the specimens from the river. He carried out a taxonomic analysis of it jointly with Nelson P Abraham of St Thomas College, Kozhencherry. The report about the finding of the new species is published in the latest edition of the 'Journal of Experimental Zoology', an international journal. (PTI)
