THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Forest personnel took a man into custody for allegedly hunting down migratory birds on a paddy field in Malappuram district of Kerala recently. The man was nabbed after a wildlife photographer published a picture of him and his accomplice shooting White Egrets using an air gun, on the fields near Chemmadu in the district. Based on the photographs, wildlife officials registered a case against both of them and a search was on to nab the second person.
The gun, considered to be used for the crime, was also seized from the arrested, they said. Both of them would be booked under the Wildlife Protection Act, sources added. The sprawling paddy fields and wetlands in Malappuram district is a favorite destination of migratory birds. However, with the beginning of migratory season this year, poaching bids have been rampant in the region. Forest department officials said they would intensify patrolling in the region and would take stern action against those involved in the crime. (PTI)
