THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - A newly-wed couple in Kerala has distributed plant saplings during their wedding reception to promote the message of nature conservation. R Nithish and Soumya, hailing from Kottarakkara in Kollam district, distributed a host of plantlets of teak, sandal, red sanders, ashokam (saraca indica), koovalam (aegle marmelos), vayambu (acorus calamus) and so on to the guests, who visited to greet them during their wedding reception the other day.
Usually during Hindu marriages, relatives used to welcome guests by giving lemon or other fruits during the occasion. The nature buff couple decided to make a change in this practice by replacing lemons with plant saplings to propagate the message of nature conservation. Nithish said it was a unique way to spread the message of nature conservation among the people. He said they brought the saplings from a nearby forest research centre in the early morning itself. The saplings, with a card printing the names of the couple, were given in special kits, they said. Nithish said more youths should come up with innovative ideas to spread the message of nature conservation and afforestation. (PTI)
