RAMESWARAM - Forest officials foiled an attempt to smuggle large amount of conchs, which is included in the protected list, at Mandapam near south Indian coastal town Rameswaram. Banned conchs, stuffed in 36 bags, were seized from a lorry and two persons were arrested in this regard, officials said.
They said forest rangers inspected the lorry on suspicion and found two types of conchs concealed in the bags. On being questioned, the duo reportedly confessed that the conchs were smuggled from Tuticorin to this coastal town. The conchs and lorry were seized, the officials said, adding the exact value of the marine species would be known after a detailed examination. (PTI)
