MADURAI - The Madurai bench of Madras high court was shocked to hear that 2,700 trees of various species were axed in the mountains of Megamalai in Tamil Nadu by a private firm named Dream View Coffee And Tea Estate Private Ltd. A public interest litigation (PIL) in this regard had come up for hearing.
The PIL states that the officials and third parties had committed irregularities/illegalities in Megamalai Wild Life Sanctuary and it is necessary to take steps to protect the reserved forest in Megamalai. The conservator of forest accepted that trees were illegally cut down. A field visit on the mountains showed that the wildlife warden hard recommended the firm’s application for axing of trees, based on which, permission for the same was given. But, the firm illegally felled more trees, the note said.
