LOS ANGELES, CA - In order for a puzzle to be completed, all the pieces must come together. Similarly, for the Sankara Eye Foundation LA Chapter, the involvement of dedicated youth and adult volunteers was central this year. walked to eradicate curable blindness in India. Five years later, over 250 participants joined hands together in the chapter’s annual walk-a-thon. The first ever Holi event in March was a sold out one.
Continuing the ongoing efforts to spread the good word about SEF to gain a larger mind space in the community, the first Dhandia Dhamaka was held in Simi Valley Boys and Girls Club in Oct where 500 people danced for a cause with a style, helping the organization reach its mission to provide 20/20 vision to the needy people in India by 2020. Adding to these efforts, the Bank of America Mortgage Technology team organized the 3rd annual badminton tournament in Nov 2016 and donated the proceeds to the organization.
SEF particularly cited members of the Youth Club of Ventura County for their dedication and providing new methods of accomplishing different tasks. The team consists which has about 25 school and college students created Gift of Vision Clubs in various high schools. They constantly organize multiple fundraisers to support SEF’s mission including music concerts and a 60-day summer campaign. The goal for every youth was to raise money to support five eye surgeries. There were not specific methods of raising the money, although working in Kumon & Mathnasium, selling books, baked goods, and setting up “go-fund-me” pages were most common. All the youth who participated accomplished way more from their minimum goal and raised funds to support 220 eye surgeries. The Youth Team wrapped up the year 2016 with a winter campaign “Penny for an Eye” collection drive.
