GARDEN GROVE, CA – The Indian Medical Association of Southern California held its 37th annual convention and gala at the Hyatt Regency here on Nov 18 and 19. The gala evening on Nov 19 kicked off with Ganesh Vandana and the national anthems of the U.S. and India. President of the association, Dr. Balu Gadhe,
in his implicating address, thanked the members and executive committee for extending him full support during his tenure. He said when he started a year ago, there were three priorities in front of him; unity among the members, involving more young physicians in the organization and giving back as a physician community to the broader community. With the help of his executive committee members and board of trusties, he was able to achieve what he aimed for.
Chief Guest for the occasion was CEO of CareMore Health Systems, Dr. Sachin Jain, MD, MBA, a consulting professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and recognized as one of the ‘40 most influential people in Boston Area under the age of 40.’ Jain gave an impressive talk on the topic, “Being Indian in 2016: Does it matter?” While sharing his childhood memories and his personal journey that led him to become a successful person, Jain said it had a lot to do with him being an Indian and he was very proud of his Indian heritage. He said as Indians, we must stand firm and support each other as we share a rich tradition and cultural background. He also talked about how scarcity of opportunities back home had affected our behavior here in the US as well and instead of feeling proud of the achievements of fellow Indians, we, out of our short term thinking and jealousy, undermine and undercut each other. Grand sponsor of the event Dr. K P Choudhary speaking to the gathering said “we Indians may be very successful as individuals but together as a community, we can still do better.”
Dr. Nitin Jain encouraged the physician community to pay back to the community at large and urged them to participate in community oriented programs like free medical camps and free clinics here in the U.S and in India.
Chairman Board of Trusties Dr. Dilip Patel appreciated the work done by Dr. Balu Gadhe during his tenure as President and the board members for their guidance. Mayor Pro-tem, Dr. Naresh Solanki presented a Proclamation on behalf of the City of Cerritos to Dr. Balu Gadhe in appreciation of the work done.
The evening’s highlight was the lively Bollywood movie songs. Amit Anand and Mausmi Shah took the stage with their phenomenal voices and filled the air with nostalgia. The entertainment for the night was breathtaking. Amit set the tone with the all time favorite, ‘Ye Shaam Mastani’ and ‘Oh Hansni Kahan Ud Chelli’. Every which way, it almost appeared as if there were multiple Rajesh Khanna’s and Asha Parikhs within the crowd, though few were Dharminder look alikes too. Love was in the air and all the beautiful couples danced to the tunes of amazing and evergreen Bollywood tunes.
Along came the boys of Southern California’s finest bhangra team, ‘Got Bhangra’ that awed the crowd with their energetic and talented performance which got guests out to the dance floor. Amit and his band continued the magic with popular music composer, presenter and arranger Anis Chandani with his masterly musical notes and flute pieces, winning the hearts of all. The band made many of the doctors dance to their tunes and even had them doing the famous ‘rail gaddi’. Sea Breeze group presented beautiful Tahitian and Hawaiian Dances. All in all it was a well organized and entertaining event.
