Aparna Hande. It started by honoring Veteran’s Day and thanking the attendees who had served the country. Kuusto introduced GOPIO speakers, Inder Singh, Kewal Kanda and Navin Gupta. Singh, Kanda and Gupta explained to the audience the purpose of formation of GOPIO-LA chapter and its contribution to the community.
At the first session, attendees were given a presentation on diabetes by Hande. Deepi Singh then spoke about diet and nutrition followed by Kuusto, who presented a talk about the use of medications. Local pharmacist, Lilian Lee, closed first part of the session with some educational tips about insulin injections.
A complimentary, healthy Indian lunch was provided to all. During lunch, East-West Medical Clinic’s Dr. Roy Klopfer explained how the use of acupuncture could help neuropathy pain in diabetes treatment. The second session was geared towards the prevention of heart disease and presented by Hande and Dr. Manorama S. Gupta, who explained the different kinds of heart diseases, signs and symptoms, treatment and medications.
Dr. Asmath Noor, a local dentist, explained the effects of gum disease on the heart and how it relates to diabetes. Anju Garg then conducted a live healthy cooking demonstration and all of the attendees were offered a free sample. The meeting ended with a raffle draw and seven participants walked away happily with beautiful gifts.
