freshly prepared dinner under a beautiful Southern California sky. The Performing Arts Center at Northwood High School here was artfully decorated by Ekal volunteers with floral designs. The program began with National Anthems of India and US. Deepak Sharma, President of the Ekla Chapter welcomed the guests. Mayuri Mehta and Sneha Sharma opened the event with a dynamic fund raiser. . Mehta gave a detailed introduction of Ekal to the audience while Sharma related her experience of visiting Ekal schools in India. They gave a very informative talk to the audience introducing them to the activities of Ekal Vidyalaya.
Kaushik Deshpande introduced his team of artists and began the mesmerizing program of dance, music and Bollywood songs. He and his team sang popular old songs as well as new songs. Kaushik and the group mesmerized the audience with their mastery and versatility. The audience clapped and sang along ; with many dancing in front of the stage. The group took a break at 9am and the audience was served hot delicious tea. Sulabha Abhyankar thanked all for coming, expressing special thanks to Kaushik Deshpande Group .`` We hope next time they will come with more time on hand to allow us to extend `Californian hospitality’ from the local Indian community,’ she said. The mission of Ekal, India’s largest NGO, is to eradicate illiteracy from the rural and remote tribal villages of India and Nepal. Ekal works through its unique “dollar a day” scheme; $365 provides a whole year of free education for 30-35 children at an Ekal school.
