LAKE FOREST, CA - `Educate a Kid’ (EAK) hosted a fundraising banquet on Nov 3 at Godavari South Indian Cuisine Banquet Hall here with around 250 guests in attendance. funds in 13 years. The evening started with the lamp lighting by the major sponsor K.P.and Brinda Hari, Organization of Hindu Malayees (OHM) Board members and EAK committee members. President of OHM Rema Nair welcomed all the guests for the 13th annual banquet. The Chief Guest was Sajan Pillai, CEO of UST Global whose idea was to support a student and thus save a family. He has been supporting and sponsoring the event for the last 13 years. Pillai and Lata Hariharan donated generously for EAK and were felicitated by Nair. Pillai in his speech offered all help to provide more scholarships to educate under privileged bright students. He explained what UST Global was offering education in 124 countries and emphasized the importance of providing education to young adults to be productive citizens of their countries.
K.P and Brinda Hari were felicitated by Ravi Vellatheri, Director Fund Raising, EAK/OHM.
The highlight this year was 10 second generation kids who donated generously.
It was announced that EAK distributed scholarships for higher education in nursing, engineering and medicine to about 850 students and the total amount distributed was over $320,000 with an endowment fund of $100,000.
EAK conducts all activities without any overhead and all the directors of OHM Board and EAK team offer their services on a purely voluntary bases. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu there are 14 advisors who select underprivileged students who are excellent in studies and monitor their grade point average and verify income level to make sure deserving students get scholarships. UST Global offers employment to students who graduate college with EAK scholarship.
Dr. Sreedevi Warrier, Chair EAK explained the activities of EAK for last year saying `` we gave scholarships to 125 students last year and this year are planning to award scholarship for at least 135 students.’’ She appealed to the audience to donate generously.
The keynote speaker Dr. Stringer from Harbor UCLA could not be present due to an unexpected emergency assignment out of state. He sent his recorded message via video. Kirthi Paliath emceed the program.
Dr. Eric Gutierrez Tutor and Educationist who volunteered to give free counseling to high school students was felicitated by Jay Nair, Co Chair EAK. Secretary of OHM Vinodh Bahuleyan proposed the vote of thanks. A delicious dinner was provided to all.
